On Sunday December 15, a couple hundred runners turned out to Sutter’s Landing Park in Sacramento for the Fleet Feet Free Holiday Classic. This is the second year I have participated in the race, which includes 3 of my favorite things: running, charity and FREE!

The cost of the race is a new unwrapped toy. The registration is simple, you show up sign a release of liability form. No age group winners, no overall winners, just good old running. However, this race does include a lot of race features, a clock at the start / finish line, free t-shirts (from previous races), coffee and water, and a well marked 5k course.
I treated the event as a get out and run have some fun and in fact take some photos. Running with my phone is something I rarely do, so this is one of those times where it is just about running to run. At the event I also met another awesome blogger and Tweep from the Sacramento area, Haley from iamarunnergirl.com.

|Getting ready to run with Dan|
When the “race” started, I opted to run with my buddy Dan, we used this run to get a 5k under his belt and get him ready for his half marathon training. He will be running his first 13.1-mile race in March at the Shamrock’n Half Marathon in Sacramento. He ran a consistent 5k and felt good crossing the line at 22:38 based on the race clock. His wife ran her first 5k and had a good run finishing not too far behind us.

I like this race because you can tack on some miles by getting out there early or run after. I opted to run a little before and a little after to get some miles in for my Sunday morning. The route is simple it is mostly gravel along the out and back course. Most people are out of the area before 10am, while others stick around and hangout sipping on some coffee and hot chocolate while chatting with friends.
Did you or are you planning on running a holiday fun run? Do they have any free runs of this type in your community?
