Mileage Monday: The toughest week ahead

Last week I completed my final last 2 something of substance workouts, with my Tuesday intervals (6x 1 miles) and my Thursday Marathon Pace run (10 miles @ MP). During the week I still accumulated 64.58 miles in the 7 workouts during the week. My workouts last week consisted of the following:

Monday – 9.08 miles at easy pace
Tuesday – 10.25 miles total; warm-up, 6 x 1miles w/ 400m recovery, cool down
Wednesday – 4.09 recovery miles
Thursday – 14.01 miles total; warm-up, 10 miles at Marathon Pace, cool down
Friday – 7 miles easy
Saturday 10.03 miles easy
Sunday – 10.12 miles easy

Friday was the beginning of my taper period as I get ready for this upcoming Sunday’s Ventura Marathon. This past weekend also brought an end of another month and the beginning of September. I was fortunate enough to load another heavy mileage month in August with a total of 318.17 miles, which is my third highest monthly total of the year. The August mileage brought me to a total of 2379.63 miles.

With my eye on the prize coming this Sunday, the final 6 days before toeing my 4th marathon of 2013 and 15th overall cannot come soon enough. The taper period is always the toughest time for me, but I know it is what I need to do in order to be best prepared for this weekend’s marathon. Registration for the 2014 Boston Marathon opens on September 9, so the September 8 will be my final attempt to get a BQ that will get me into 2014.
