This morning started off with a speed workout and building into a night time P90X strength workout. The morning was nice and cool, with the air being a little bit wet but still good enough to get out and run and push myself. When it is in the high 40s or low 50s during a run it is pretty easy to get the body pushing to it’s limits when it comes to speed workouts.
The morning run started off with a 10 minute warm-up run. I covered a little over 2,000 meters today so the tempo was good just in the warm-up alone. I then proceeded into the scheduled speed plan. Today it was 5 sets of 1,000 meters. The times varied during my 1,000 meters, ranging from as quick as 3:45 per 1k to as slow as 4:07 per 1k. Between each of the 1,000 meters was a 400 meter jog recovery interval. After the speed portion I jogged for about 5 minutes bringing me back to my home to continue with my workout for the morning.
I jumped right into the Insanity Plyometric Cardio Circuit. The workout is about 40 minutes in length and really hits the hamstrings and quads in the workout, along with some upper body strength. I know some of you might think, wow that is a lot work, and perhaps even a little bit of over training. But looking back on last year, I was running more miles and doing the Insanity program and I posted my best times during these types of workouts. Perhaps for me it is about pushing hard through various workouts that allows me to perform better in my races. It is worth a shot and if I need to back down, then I will do that but for the next couple of months I am going to push as hard as possible and taper back when needed.
For the evening, I got back onto the night time garage group workouts with my buddy Will who has been working out with me now over a year and a half so we have been keeping it consistent. These evening workouts are our strength workouts, tonight we did the P90X back and biceps workout. I started tracking the weights I was able to use and the number of reps. The photo at the very start of the blog is the tracking sheet I used for tonight. While for the pull ups / back exercises for tonight, I used resistance bands for the pull ups. I used a 30 pound resistance attached to the beams in my garage. This is a good alternative when you don’t have a pull up bar to use or feel like changing it up.
Well this is going to be a very interesting next couple months as I start to really push and get the most that I can through various workouts, but still making my running my main focus.
