See Me

Run: Active Rest
Additional Workout: Insanity Max Interval Circuit

As many of you that have been following my blogs know as of late I have been running at some very early times during the World Cup. With the first games kicking off at 4.30 am and sometimes getting my run in before then, it is clear that it is still dark out. So I thought I would blog about a couple of items I use when I run during these dim hours. I use three items sometimes all at the same time sometimes one or two at a time depending on the route I use. I have a reflective vest, a LED light, and reflective straps.

The most common item that I use is my Nathan reflective vest. It is a great product because it is light weight, adjustable and easy to run with. The cost is about $20, which is all worth it considering it could be the difference between a driver seeing you and not seeing you.

The second item I use pretty often and sometimes while I wear my verst are my reflective ankle straps by Asics. These are $10, again well worth the investment to protect your safety on the road. The nice thing with these are as your feet move they move since they are around your ankles. They can get a little use to running with but it doesn’t take too long to not even notice them around your ankles.

The third item I use to keep visible on the roads is an LED light by Nathan. This one is rarely used unless I know there will be a lot of possible distractions on the road so the red blinking light will allow for drivers to see me very clearly on the road. The only downside to this is that it tends to move around a lot on my running shorts / waist line. The cost is about $10 like the straps but again all worth it if you go into high traffic areas and want that extra item to be seen on the road.

Ultimately we as runners can only do so much to make sure to be seen and protect ourselves. The best way to be safe on the road is just to be aware of your surroundings, for me knowing the routes I run and trying to face oncoming traffic is easier for me on the roads so I can see what is coming up towards me. I hope some of these items are helpful if you are looking for something to be more seen on the roads.
